01Why IAQ Matters in Charlotte

Charlotte's year-round climate creates IAQ challenges in both directions: summer humidity drives mold risk and biological growth in HVAC systems, while winter heating reduces indoor humidity to levels that affect respiratory comfort.

The HVAC system is the primary indoor air quality tool in most Charlotte homes. How well it performs depends on filter maintenance, equipment condition, and whether the building envelope contributes to or compounds the IAQ situation.

02Humidity

Target range: 35–55% relative humidity year-round. Charlotte summers naturally drive indoor humidity above this range if the cooling system is improperly sized, poorly maintained, or if significant air infiltration brings outdoor humidity in faster than the system can remove it.

In winter, gas-heated homes may drop below 35% RH, creating dry conditions. Whole-house humidifiers connected to the air handler address this; they require maintenance to prevent bacteria and scale buildup.

03Filtration

Charlotte's spring pollen season — March through May — places heavy demand on HVAC filtration. A MERV 8–11 filter provides reasonable pollen and dust control without restricting airflow in most systems. Higher-MERV filters require more frequent replacement or a system designed for higher static pressure.

Filter replacement timing: fresh filter at the start of pollen season, again at the end. Year-round, every 60–90 days for 1" filters.

04Ventilation and Newer Construction

Tighter construction common in Charlotte's newer subdivisions can accumulate indoor pollutants (VOCs from furnishings, finishes, cleaning products) that natural air exchange previously diluted. An ERV or HRV provides controlled fresh air exchange — the eco-sensible choice over simply opening windows in Charlotte's humid summers.
